Estepona is a relaxed, walkable Costa del Sol town that rewards dog owners who plan around the heat and the summer beach rules. The Old Town's flower-pot streets, the marina and the seafront promenade are all easy to enjoy with a leashed dog, while a handful of seasonal rules are worth knowing before you go.
Andalusian summers are intense, often above 28 to 30ยฐC, and the seafront has almost no shade. Walk dogs at dawn or after sunset, test pavement and sand with your hand before letting paws touch it, carry water on every outing, and never leave a dog in a parked car. Whitewashed Old Town streets and the inland pine forest offer the best midday shade.
Dogs are banned from all of Estepona's municipal beaches from 1 June to 30 September, and fines are substantial. If you visit in summer and want beach time, drive to an official dog beach (playa canina): Piedra Paloma in Casares on the western boundary, El Pinillo in Marbella, or Las Arenas in Manilva. Outside those months dogs are more widely tolerated on quieter local beaches.
Estepona has no train station, so most visitors arrive through Mรกlaga (AGP) airport. Spanish buses only carry small dogs (under 10 kg in a carrier), so a larger dog means a pre-booked pet-friendly transfer or a hire car. To bring a dog into Spain from the EU you need a microchip, a valid rabies vaccination and an EU pet passport; non-EU arrivals need an EU animal health certificate.
Spend a morning walking the Old Town's flower-pot streets and the Ruta de Murales artistic murals route, then drop down to the Puerto Deportivo for a meal on a dog-friendly terrace. It is flat, shaded in parts, and entirely doable on a leash. Note that Selwo Aventura safari park and the Orquidario botanical park do not allow dogs, so plan those for a day without your pet.
