Dog-Friendly Attractions in Copenhagen

The most famous image of Copenhagen — a row of brightly coloured 17th- and 18th-century townhouses reflected in the canal water, lined with historic wooden ships. The canal walk from Nyhavn to Kongens Nytorv and onwards to the harbour front is one of the best urban walks in northern Europe, and entirely dog-friendly as long as your dog is on leash. The promenade extends seamlessly to the new waterfront developments at Ofelia Plads and the old fort at Kastellet, making it possible to walk for well over an hour without repeating ground.

The famous self-governing neighbourhood established in 1971 on a former military site is a genuinely unique Copenhagen experience. The outdoor areas of Christiania — the main Pusher Street, the Moat, and the green spaces along the old ramparts — are dog-friendly. Dogs are extremely common here; the community has always had a close relationship with animals. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal. Note that photography restrictions apply in parts of Christiania. Visit during daylight hours for the best experience.

One of the best-preserved Renaissance star fortresses in northern Europe, with five bastions, a moat, and green ramparts that are entirely open to the public as a park. Kastellet is a favourite dog-walking spot for locals in the nearby Østerbro neighbourhood. Dogs on leash can walk the full circuit of the ramparts — about 1.5 km — with beautiful views over the harbour and Churchillparken. The Little Mermaid statue is just a short walk from the north gate.
