Chania has limited green space inside the walls, but the 1.6 km Venetian Harbour promenade out to the Egyptian Lighthouse, the leafy Public Garden behind the cathedral, and the Nea Chora coastal path give a comfortable daily dog rotation year-round.
Old Town waterfront · Akti Tompazi, 73100 Chania
The most iconic dog walk in Chania: an 800 m stone breakwater curving out to the 19th-century Egyptian Lighthouse (one of the oldest in the Mediterranean). Flat, sea breeze, panoramic views of the Venetian Harbour and the White Mountains behind.
💡 Best at sunset, the lighthouse glows orange and the White Mountains turn pink. Avoid midday in summer, the stone gets blistering hot for paws.
Behind the cathedral · Tzanakaki, 73100 Chania
Founded in 1870 by the Ottoman governor Reouf Pasha, this is the only proper green park inside Chania. Mature plane and palm trees, a small clock tower, a tiny zoo (closed to pets), and shaded paths. The locals' afternoon dog rotation.
💡 Useful for the July–August afternoon heat (32 °C in town, 28 °C in the shade here). The small zoo at the centre is the only zone where dogs are banned, stay on the outer ring paths.
West of the old town · Nea Chora, 73100 Chania
Flat 2.5 km seafront path starting just west of the Firkas Fortress, running along Nea Chora and Aghioi Apostoloi beaches. A continuous succession of cafés, tavernas and small bays. The local dog social hub at sunset.
💡 Walk from Firkas to Aghioi Apostoloi in about 35 min, stop at the small Lazaretto cove for a shaded sea view. Bus 21 runs back to the centre every 20 min.
