Chania is the gateway to the most spectacular beaches in Crete: the urban Nea Chora (leashed dogs off-season), the long sandy Falassarna 30 km west, the pink-sand NATURA 2000 Elafonissi 75 km south-west (leashed only), and the lagoon of Balos 55 km north-west (boat from Kissamos).
Nea Chora, 73100 Chania
The closest beach to the Old Town, 800 m west of the Firkas Fortress. Sandy with a gentle slope, family-friendly. In high season (Jun–Sep) dogs allowed only on lead; off-season the western end becomes a de facto dog beach.
💡 Walk 15 min from the Venetian Harbour to reach it. From November to April the western end is empty and effectively a free off-leash beach.
Falassarna, 73400 Kissamos
1 km long sandy beach 30 km west of Chania, the second-best sunset in Greece per Greek media polls. Five distinct coves; the northernmost (Pachia Ammos) is the quietest and the local dog spot.
💡 Park at the northern lot to skip the sunbed-rented main beach. KTEL bus from Chania runs twice daily in summer (45 min).
Elafonissi, 73001 Chania
World-famous pink-sand lagoon 75 km south-west of Chania, separated from the islet by a knee-deep crossing. NATURA 2000 protected dune ecosystem; dogs must stay leashed and on the wet sand at all times.
💡 Arrive before 10:00 or after 17:00 to avoid both crowds and the burning midday sand. Wardens enforce the NATURA 2000 rules strictly, do not let your dog dig in the dunes.
Gramvousa peninsula, 73400 Chania
Turquoise-and-white lagoon on the Gramvousa peninsula 55 km north-west, reached by the daily Kissamos cruise (2h round-trip, dogs welcome on deck) or a rough 7 km gravel road plus 1.2 km steep walk down. Iconic Crete postcard.
💡 The Gramvousa-Balos cruise from Kissamos accepts leashed dogs on the open deck (free); confirm at the ticket office. Bring water, the lagoon has no fresh water and 1 hour of shade total.
