Cartagena is an easy, walkable old town that rewards travellers with a calm, leashed dog, but the Murcian summer heat and a handful of strict seasonal rules shape almost every plan. The single most important thing to get right is timing your walks and beach days around the sun. A few local habits and laws to know before you go.
Dogs must be leashed on all public streets and promenades; off-leash is only allowed inside the fenced parque canino by the Parque de la Rosa. Owners must pick up waste and, for breeds on Spain's potentially dangerous dog list, carry a muzzle and a short non-extendable leash. The Calblanque Regional Park beaches ban dogs entirely from 1 June to 30 September.
From June to September the midday asphalt and harbour-front stone can burn paws in seconds. Test the ground with the back of your hand, walk before 09:00 or after sunset, carry water everywhere, and watch for heatstroke signs. Keep the 24h Hospital Veterinario Faucán number saved (+34 968 087 929) before you travel.
Spring (April–May) and autumn (October–November) are ideal: warm sea, mild air, and far fewer crowds, with the old town comfortable to walk all day. Summer is hot and demands dawn and dusk routines. Winter is gentle and quiet, perfect for long harbour-front walks with your dog.
Walk the free, always-open Parque Arqueológico Cerro del Molinete at golden hour: an open-air Roman archaeological park on a hill in the heart of the old town, with dogs welcome on-leash and sweeping views over Cartagena. Pair it with Calle Mayor and the harbour promenade for a complete, car-free old-town loop.
