Pet-Friendly Attractions in Cartagena

Cartagena's car-free main street and the social spine of the old town, a smooth marble-paved promenade lined with Belle Époque and Art Nouveau facades like the Casino, the Gran Hotel and the Casa Cervantes. Leashed dogs are completely at home here, weaving between terrace cafés and shop windows. It is the natural starting point for an old-town walk, and most of its terraces welcome a dog at your feet.

One of Europe's largest urban archaeological parks, a free, always-open hilltop of around 26,000 square metres in the heart of the old town, layering Punic, Roman, Byzantine and Arab remains with landscaped paths and panoramic views. Leashed dogs are welcome on the open-air walkways, making it a rare way to see Cartagena's Roman heritage without leaving your dog behind. The slopes catch the breeze and it is gloriously quiet at sunrise and sunset.

The interpretation centre built around a surviving stretch of the 3rd-century BC Carthaginian city wall, the starting point for understanding Cartagena's Punic and Roman past and home to the main tourist information office. The indoor exhibition admits only accredited guide and assistance dogs, but the surrounding Calle San Diego area and the old wall remains can be enjoyed outdoors with a leashed dog. A useful first stop to orient your old-town walk.
