Beaches and Waterfront for Dogs near Bordeaux

The Quais de Bordeaux is a 4.5km UNESCO World Heritage riverside promenade stretching along the left bank of the Garonne. Dogs are welcome on a leash throughout and the broad granite paving and tree-lined sections make for one of the finest urban riverside walks in France. The Miroir d'Eau, a vast shallow reflecting pool installed near the Place de la Bourse, is a particular highlight: dogs are permitted in the outdoor area and many wade into the shallow water during summer. The quais connect directly to the Pont de Pierre for a natural circuit.

A large artificial lake on the northern edge of Bordeaux, created in the 1960s as part of a planned urban development. The lake is surrounded by a public park with grass banks and tree-lined paths. Dogs are permitted on the banks and in the non-designated swimming areas year-round. In practice, dog owners use the grassy banks freely for swimming and playing. The designated human swimming areas are buoyed off during summer, and dogs must avoid these, but the rest of the lake perimeter is accessible and popular with dog owners throughout the year.

The Atlantic beaches of the Arcachon area are approximately one hour by car or TER train from Bordeaux central station and represent the best full beach experience accessible from the city. Dog rules vary significantly by commune and by season. Outside of July and August, many beaches permit dogs on leash. During peak summer season (July–August), dogs are typically banned from designated swimming beaches between certain hours. The beaches at Lège-Cap-Ferret on the peninsula opposite Arcachon tend to be less restrictive. The Dune du Pilat, Europe's largest sand dune, permits dogs on leash on the dune itself and on the adjacent forest paths.
