Dog-Friendly Parks & Off-Leash Areas in Bonn

Bonn's flagship park, 160 hectares of meadows, an artificial lake, woodland paths and the famous Japanese Garden, laid out for the 1979 Bundesgartenschau. Dogs must be leashed in most of the park, but a large dedicated off-leash meadow (Hundewiese) sits along Landgrabenweg below Ludwig-Erhard-Allee, with poo-bag dispensers and bins. Allow 1.5–2 hours for a full circuit of the lake.

A vast 40 km² mixed forest covering the western edge of Bonn, with a dense network of marked trails, the Waldau wildlife enclosure and the Haus der Natur visitor centre. The leash rule applies from March 1 to July 15 (ground-nesting bird season), and year-round near the Waldau enclosures, but outside those windows dogs may walk under voice control on most paths. Expect cool temperatures even in midsummer — the canopy is dense.

A 6 km Rhine-side promenade running from the Kennedybrücke south to Bad Godesberg, with wide pedestrian paths, benches, mature trees and uninterrupted river views. Dogs must be on a leash the entire length, but the promenade is broad enough to share comfortably with cyclists and joggers. The Beuel side (eastern bank, reached by Kennedybrücke or the Bastei ferry) is quieter and often preferred with dogs on busy summer weekends.
