Abu Dhabi is a rewarding but specific place to travel with a dog. It is opening up fast (the January 2026 rule now lets licensed hotels and restaurants welcome pets), but it is still a desert capital where dogs are less present in public than in Europe, the heat is dangerous half the year, and a few cultural and legal norms matter. Plan a winter-sun trip (November to March), base yourself near the dog-friendly Yas Island and Saadiyat cluster, and keep your dog leashed and low-key in public.

Heat is the single biggest risk. From May to September daytime temperatures regularly exceed 40 C and pavement can scald paws in seconds; even in spring and autumn midday is too hot for many dogs. Walk only at dawn or after dark in the hot months, carry water everywhere, and test the ground with the back of your hand. Never leave a dog in a parked car, even briefly. The comfortable window for a dog is the winter, roughly November to March, when days are warm and pleasant.
Dogs are less common in public space in Abu Dhabi than in Europe, and not everyone is comfortable around them, partly for cultural reasons. Keep your dog leashed and close, avoid letting it approach people or children uninvited, and steer clear of mosques and prayer areas. This is not hostility, just a more reserved norm: a calm, well-controlled dog is welcome on the dog-friendly waterfronts and terraces. Dangerous breeds are banned from entry to the UAE entirely.
The most dog-friendly base is Yas Island, where most pet-welcoming hotels and a cluster of dog-friendly terraces sit together, with Saadiyat a close second. Since pets are not allowed on buses or standard taxis, budget for a rental car or a pre-booked pet-taxi from the start, and pick a hotel with parking.
