Salamanca

Widely considered Spain's most beautiful square, built between 1729 and 1755 by Andrés García de Quiñones. An open public square 24/7, fully accessible to leashed dogs. The northern arcades offer summer shade.

One of Europe's oldest universities (founded 1218). Its Plateresque façade (1529) hides the famous good-luck frog on a skull. The outer Patio de Escuelas welcomes leashed dogs, but the interior does not.

The twin cathedrals, the Romanesque Vieja (12th c.) and the late-Gothic Nueva (16th c.), connect inside. Dogs are not allowed in (except assistance dogs), but the Plaza de Anaya in front is open to all.

1st-century Roman bridge crossing the Tormes south of the centre. Pedestrian only, offering the best view of the cathedral skyline. A must for dog walks at sunset.

15th-century palace whose façade is studded with over 300 carved scallop shells. Its inner courtyard now houses a public library: dogs are welcome in the courtyard but not in the reading room.

The largest park in the centre (13 ha), with a fenced off-leash area in the south-east corner. Daily meeting point for Salamanca dog owners in the late afternoon.
