Backed by the Taurus Mountains and opening onto the Mediterranean, Antalya is the capital of the Turkish Riviera and the country's great gateway to seaside tourism. Its historic heart, Kaleici, unrolls a maze of cobbled lanes enclosed by ramparts, lined with wooden Ottoman houses, hammams and the elegant Hadrian's Gate, a Roman triumphal arch raised in 130 AD. Below, the horseshoe-shaped old harbour, once a Roman haven, now welcomes excursion boats. Around the city, the Düden waterfalls tumble off the cliff straight into the sea, while the long beaches of Konyaalti and Lara stretch either side of the centre. For a traveller with a dog, Antalya is appealing for its street culture that is kind to animals and its well-known municipal stray-care programme, but it demands planning around extreme summer heat.
Historic old town enclosed by ramparts, a maze of cobbled lanes, Ottoman houses and shaded courtyards sloping down to the harbour. A charming, free stroll on a leash, where the local culture of street cats and dogs is very much alive.
Hadrian's Gate, a three-arched Roman triumphal gateway raised in 130 AD for the emperor's visit, the only surviving ancient gate in the city walls. An open-air monument freely accessible, with leashed dogs welcome on the paved square.
The upper Düden falls set in a wooded park north of the city, with a path running behind the curtain of water. Leashed dogs are allowed on the shaded park paths, a refreshing stop welcome in the hot hours.
The lower Düden falls that plunge from a 40 m cliff straight into the sea at Lara, best admired from the park viewpoints. Leashed dogs on the overlooks, but keep them well away from the unfenced cliff edge.
A long shingle beach at the foot of the Taurus Mountains, the main city beach west of the centre. Dogs are generally not allowed on this managed beach in high season; look instead for quieter coves out of season.
The horseshoe-shaped old harbour below Kaleici, a former Roman haven turned marina lined with terraces and excursion boats. A pleasant on-leash stroll along the quays, and most terrace cafes tolerate dogs outside.
