Leipzig: geschiedenis en karakter

Leipzig, Saxony's historic capital and a European trade hub since the 12th century, is world-famous for its musical scene (Bach directed the Thomanerchor for 27 years) and for being the cradle of the 1989 Peaceful Revolution that ended East Germany. Today, it's one of Germany's most dynamic and affordable cities, the Plagwitz creative district in former cotton mills, a dense café scene on the Karli, and a compact medieval centre dominated by the Renaissance Altes Rathaus. For travellers with a dog, Leipzig is a revelation: 5,500 hectares of Auenwald floodplain forest reaching into the centre, 11 fenced municipal Hundeauslaufzonen, the Karl-Heine-Kanal towpath linking Plagwitz to the Karli on 7 km off-leash, and a year-round Hundestrand at Cospudener See 12 min by S-Bahn. Direct ICE to Berlin in 1h15 and to Dresden in 1h10, Leipzig is the ideal base for exploring eastern Germany with a dog at a cost well below Munich or Hamburg.
