Ook in Germany
Bonn sits on the left bank of the Rhine, a market town from the 1st-century Roman fort Castra Bonnensia, the seat of the Cologne Archbishop-Electors from the 13th century, the birthplace of Ludwig van Beethoven in 1770, and - perhaps most consequentially - the provisional capital of West Germany from 1949 to 1990. Reunification moved the federal apparatus to Berlin, but Bonn kept seventeen UN agencies, two ministries, and the post-war architecture of the Bundesviertel district. The result is a city of 330,000 with the cultural infrastructure of a capital and the human scale of a university town. Dogs have long been part of the picture: Beethoven himself was a dog owner, the Rheinaue Bundesgartenschau park (1979) was laid out with off-leash meadows, and the city's mix of green space, walkable historic centre and easy ferry access to the Siebengebirge make it one of the more relaxed cities in Germany for an unhurried weekend with a four-legged companion.
Bonn's flagship 160-hectare park, laid out for the 1979 Bundesgartenschau, with a 38-hectare lake, the Japanese Garden, and a dedicated off-leash dog meadow along Landgrabenweg. Most paths are leashed but the Hundewiese is signed and well-used; bag dispensers and bins are provided.
Bonn's 900-year-old Romanesque basilica on Münsterplatz, with a 92 m spire and a 12th-century cloister. The interior is closed to dogs except registered assistance dogs, but the square outside is one of the most photogenic spots in the city, ringed with dog-welcoming café terraces.
A 40 km² mixed forest on the western edge of the city, with a dense network of marked trails, the Waldau wildlife enclosure and the Haus der Natur visitor centre. Voice-control walking is allowed outside the 1 March–15 July nesting season, except near the wildlife enclosures where the leash is mandatory year-round.
A former bastion of the city wall converted into a leafy Rhine viewpoint, looking across the river to the Siebengebirge. Dogs are welcome on the lawn and the connecting promenade; the spot is a favourite for sunset walks and for a slow coffee after the Altstadt.
The most famous peak of the Siebengebirge nature park, accessible from Königswinter via the Bastei ferry. A ruined hilltop castle, panoramic views over Bonn and the Rhine, and Schloss Drachenburg on the slope. The rack railway (Drachenfelsbahn) accepts leashed dogs; the trail is also dog-friendly and well-marked.
A 6 km Rhine-side promenade from the Kennedybrücke south to Bad Godesberg, lined with mature plane trees and benches. Leash mandatory the entire length, but the path is broad enough to share comfortably with cyclists and joggers. Free Bastei ferry crossings let you swap to the quieter Beuel bank mid-walk.
