Kaş is a quiet little town on the Lycian coast of Mediterranean Turkey (Antalya province), long a fishing village and now a haven for divers, sailors and nature lovers. Built like an amphitheatre above a sheltered harbour, facing the Greek island of Kastellórizo, it has kept an intimate charm that its bigger neighbours have lost. Its lanes, bright with bougainvillea, drop down to a lively seafront dotted with the remains of ancient Antiphellos: a Roman amphitheatre at the water's edge and Lycian tombs carved straight into the cliff above the houses. All around lie the turquoise cove of Kaputaş, the crystal-clear waters of the bay and the trails of the Lycian Way, a long coastal hiking route. It is an ideal setting for a trip with a dog, tempered only by intense summer heat and scorching pavement.
The ancient theatre of Antiphellos, a small, beautifully preserved Hellenistic theatre set by the sea west of town and famed for its sunsets. It is an open-air site open to leashed dogs, with stone tiers to explore with care.
The Lycian rock tombs carved into the cliff overlook the old town, including the famous King's Tomb with its sculpted façade, reachable on foot from the lanes. The surroundings can be visited freely on a leash, with a fine view over the rooftops and harbour.
Kaş's waterfront and marina, lined with cafés and dive boats, form the town's lively heart. The flat promenade along the water is easily walked on a leash, pleasant in the evening once the heat eases.
Kaputaş beach, a tiny turquoise sand cove tucked at the bottom of a gorge between Kaş and Kalkan, is one of the most photographed in Turkey. A long, steep stairway leads down; dogs are generally banned in summer on this guarded beach, so check locally.
The island of Kekova and its sunken city, Lycian ruins visible beneath the clear water, are explored by boat trip from Kaş. Some boats accept leashed dogs, so ask before boarding; bring shade and water for the day at sea.
The Lycian Way, a famous long-distance trail of over 500 km, follows the coast through Kaş with panoramic stretches high above the sea. Leashed dogs are welcome, but set off early, carry plenty of water and avoid stages in the full summer sun.
