Belfast: geschiedenis en karakter

Belfast grew on the River Lagan from a small 12th-century Norman castle, but it was the 19th-century industrial revolution that made it one of the largest industrial cities in the British Empire: linen capital of the world, and more than that, world capital of shipbuilding, the RMS Titanic launched from the Harland & Wolff shipyard in 1911. The Troubles (1968-1998) divided the city along community lines whose murals on Falls Road and Shankill Road preserve the memory. Since the Good Friday Agreement (1998), Belfast has transformed radically: revitalised Cathedral Quarter, waterfront Titanic Quarter, signposted Maritime Mile, and one of the most dog-welcoming pub cultures in the British Isles. The geography is generous: Cave Hill and its 750-acre wilderness joins the city from the north, the Lagan offers 18 km of flat towpath to Lisburn, and the east coast of County Down (year-round dog beaches) is 20 minutes by train. Unique post-Brexit quirk: under the Windsor Framework, Northern Ireland recognises EU pet passports for dogs travelling to/from the EU, unlike the rest of the UK.
