Bringing your dog into Great Britain (post-Brexit)
Since Brexit, Great Britain no longer accepts the EU Pet Passport for entry. Dogs arriving from the EU need a GB Animal Health Certificate (AHC) issued by an official vet within 10 days of travel, plus a microchip and a valid rabies vaccination, and dogs also need an approved tapeworm (Echinococcus) treatment recorded 24 to 120 hours before arrival. A GB pet passport issued in Great Britain is also valid. Sort this with your vet before you leave, as it cannot be done on arrival.
Fell safety and the Countryside Code
Dogs are welcome on the fells, but the land is farmed: keep your dog on a lead near sheep and cattle, and during the spring ground-nesting bird season, and never let it chase livestock. In summer, watch for blue-green algae in Derwentwater, which can be fatal, and check the water before a swim. Fell weather changes fast, so carry water, a towel and a spare lead, and always clean up after your dog.
When to visit and the weather
The Lake District is one of the wettest corners of England, so pack waterproofs and a dog towel whatever the month. Late spring and early autumn give the best mix of long walks and thinner crowds; midsummer is warmest and best for lake swimming but busiest, and winter is quiet, cold and often the most dramatic on the fells. Whatever the season, the walking is the point, and dogs love it year-round.
