Liverpool: storia e carattere

Liverpool, founded by King John in 1207, grew into one of Europe's great Atlantic ports from the 18th century onwards. By the 19th century 40% of world trade flowed through its docks, and its passenger fleet carried roughly 9 million emigrants to the Americas. The Pier Head waterfront and Albert Dock, UNESCO World Heritage from 2004 to 2021, still bear witness to that commercial power. The city is also the home of the Beatles, who emerged from the Cavern Club on Mathew Street, and houses two of Europe's five largest cathedrals (Anglican and Catholic). For travellers with a dog, Liverpool offers a rare mix: a compact, walkable UNESCO centre, one of north-west England's largest urban park networks (2,500 acres including Sefton Park's 95 hectares), three dog beaches within 25 minutes by Merseyrail (Crosby with its Iron Men, Formby, and Wirral), Mersey Ferries that carry leashed dogs free, and a Baltic Triangle / Albert Dock pub corridor that welcomes dogs year-round.
