A Channel fishing and trading port, Calais entered history in 1347, when Edward III's year-long siege ended as six leading citizens (the Burghers of Calais, later immortalised by Rodin) offered their lives to spare the town. The English held Calais for over two centuries, until 1558. Lace-making brought prosperity in the 19th century (the Cité de la Dentelle). Flattened in the Second World War and rebuilt around its UNESCO-listed belfry, Calais is today continental Europe's busiest cross-Channel gateway, with ferries to Dover and the Eurotunnel Le Shuttle. It is the first or last French stop for countless travellers driving between the UK and the continent, dogs included.
This 75-metre belfry, listed by UNESCO, towers over Place du Soldat Inconnu. Leashed dogs can wander the square and gardens; the interior cannot be visited with a pet.
Auguste Rodin's famous bronze, in front of the Hôtel de Ville, commemorates the 1347 sacrifice. The monument is viewed outdoors with a dog on the lead, a must-see of any visit.
This central park facing the Hôtel de Ville, with its lawns and First World War memorial, is the green lung of the centre. Leashed dogs are welcome, ideal for a stretch before a ferry.
These chalk cliffs of the Grand Site des Deux Caps offer panoramic trails over the Channel; on a clear day you can see England. Leashed dogs are allowed on the paths; keep away from the edge and nesting birds.
This medieval watchtower, one of Calais's oldest monuments, stands on Place d'Armes in the heart of Calais-Nord. Discover it on a leashed walk through the rebuilt quarter.
This wide sandy beach, extended by the seawall and seafront promenade, unwinds west of the centre below the lighthouse. Leashed dogs are allowed outside regulated summer hours and zones, check the seasonal municipal bylaw.
