Dog-Friendly Attractions in Uppsala

The tallest church in Scandinavia (118.7 m), seat of the Archbishop of Sweden and burial place of Gustav Vasa and Carl Linnaeus. The exterior promenade around the cathedral and the connecting Odinslund park are entirely walkable with a leashed dog, and the views back across the river to the city are some of the best in the country. The interior of the cathedral is dog-free except for service dogs.

One of Sweden's most legendary archaeological sites and the spiritual centre of the pre-Christian Viking world. Three enormous royal burial mounds — said by medieval chronicles to hold the bodies of the gods Thor, Odin and Frey — rise from a flat plain around an 11th-century church. The 250-hectare area is open countryside crossed by mown paths, perfect for a long on-leash walk; in summer, sheep graze the mound slopes.

Uppsala University's main botanical garden, founded in the 17th century and home to a grandiose Baroque parterre, a 200-year-old orangery, a tropical glasshouse and roughly 9 000 plant species. Leashed dogs are welcome in the outdoor gardens and on the paths; only service dogs are allowed inside the glasshouses and the orangery. The location, immediately behind Uppsala Castle, makes it the most beautiful 45-minute green stop you can pair with a castle-hill walk.
