Trapani is an easygoing, walkable base for a dog-friendly Sicilian summer, but the heat is the one factor that shapes every plan. With early starts, evening outings and the right local knowledge, exploring the salt pans, old town and islands with a dog is a pleasure. Here are the local habits and rules worth knowing before you go.
From June to September, midday temperatures regularly top 30ยฐC and the sun is intense. Walk dogs at dawn or after sunset, never on hot asphalt or stone, and carry water everywhere. Know the signs of heatstroke (heavy panting, drooling, wobbliness) and head to the 24-hour vet immediately if they appear.
The iconic Saline di Trapani salt pans and windmills are a must-see, but the WWF nature reserve does not allow dogs on its trails because of the protected flamingos and migratory birds. You can still enjoy the views and photograph the windmills from the public roads along the saltworks at sunset.
With a dog, the two best day trips are the Egadi islands by Liberty Lines hydrofoil (Favignana and Levanzo have quiet coves) and Erice by cable car. Erice sits at 750 m and stays cooler than the coast, so it doubles as a heat escape. Both accept dogs with a leash and, for larger dogs, a muzzle.
Late spring (May to early June) and early autumn (September to October) are the kindest seasons for a dog: warm sea, fewer crowds and bearable temperatures. July and August are great for the beach scene but demand strict early-and-late routines for any dog. Winters are mild and quiet, ideal for long seafront walks.
