Strasbourg is one of France's most dog-friendly cities, with a relaxed Alsatian culture that welcomes dogs in restaurants, on terraces, and in parks. A handful of local rules โ the tram muzzle, park leash obligations, and Christmas market caution โ are worth knowing before you arrive.
Dogs must be leashed on all public streets and in parks outside designated off-leash zones. Dog waste must be collected โ Strasbourg has distributed free waste bag dispensers across the city. Since July 2023, trams require muzzle + leash for dogs; buses accept only small pets in closed carriers. Fines for off-leash violations and fouling are actively enforced.
Strasbourg's Christmas market (late November to December) is one of Europe's most famous, and dogs are welcome in most outdoor market areas on a leash. Be extremely vigilant about chocolate, which is sold openly at every stall โ even a small amount of dark chocolate is toxic to dogs. Keep your dog close and watch the ground carefully in crowded market zones.
Spring (AprilโMay) and autumn (SeptemberโOctober) are ideal โ mild temperatures, beautiful blooms in the Orangerie, and fewer tourists. Summer is warm but very busy around Petite France and the Cathedral. Winter brings the Christmas markets (NovemberโDecember) and a magical atmosphere, though January and February can be genuinely cold (-1ยฐC average lows) with occasional frost.
