Stuttgart began life in the 10th century as a Stuotgarten — a royal stud farm — in the basin of the Nesenbach stream, and remains one of the few European capitals still ringed by working vineyards that climb right into its city centre. Capital of Baden-Württemberg and historic home of the Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and Bosch dynasties, the city pairs precision engineering with a Swabian outdoor culture — Biergärten, Stäffele vineyard staircases, forest trails — that makes it particularly good ground for dog owners. Largely rebuilt after the 1944 bombing raids, Stuttgart replaced its medieval core with functional post-war urbanism but preserved the Schlossgarten ribbon linking centre to Neckar, and the large hilltop parks — Killesberg and Rosensteinpark — that still structure the daily dog walk.
Stuttgart's central square, fronted by the 18th-century Neues Schloss, with lawns, fountains, and terraces. Tram lines U5/U6/U7.
61-hectare green ribbon linking the centre to the Neckar, with a fenced off-leash dog zone in the middle section between Eckensee and the Mineralbad Berg.
50-hectare hilltop park north of the centre with manicured flower terraces, the 40 m Killesbergturm wooden lookout, and a small off-leash zone at the south end. U-Bahn U5.
The largest of three forest reservoirs west of the centre, set in 200-year-old beech woodland. 6 km loop around three lakes, dog swimming tolerated outside the swan-nesting season.
Stuttgart's signature vineyard staircases (Württembergstaffel, Eugensplatzstaffel, Karlshöhestaffel) climbing south-facing slopes with classic city panoramas.
65-hectare landscape park around Schloss Rosenstein, Stuttgart's largest urban green space. Beech woodland, meadows, and connecting paths to the Neckar embankment.
