Fortezza Medicea (Forte di Santa Barbara) urban park
Terzo di Camollia / 700 m north-west of Piazza del Campo ยท Piazza La Lizza, 53100 Siena
A 2 hectare 16th-century Medici-era pentagonal brick fortress turned urban park on the north-west edge of the historic centre, built by Cosimo I de' Medici in 1561-1563 after the 1555 fall of Siena to Florence. The grass-and-gravel ramparts offer a 360 degree panoramic loop walk (1.2 km) over the Duomo, the Torre del Mangia and out to the Crete Senesi hills. A designated dog off-leash area sits on the south-east bastion. Hosts the Enoteca Italiana wine museum in the bastions.
๐ก Walk the rampart loop at sunset; the Duomo's white-and-black marble stripes catch the western light, the Torre del Mangia silhouette rises 102 m above the Campo to the south-east and your dog gets free run of the south-east bastion off-leash zone while you photograph one of the most complete Renaissance hilltop panoramas in Tuscany.
