Dog-Friendly Beaches in Santander

Santander's emblematic 1.5 km crescent of fine golden sand split into Primera and Segunda Sardinero by the Piquío promontory, lined by Belle Époque hotels and Casino. Under the municipal animal ordinance, dogs are banned from 1 May to 30 September during bathing hours; outside the bathing season they are permitted on lead. October to April mornings on the Sardinero are one of the most beautiful dog beach experiences in northern Spain.

A small wild cove at the foot of the clifftop Parque de Mataleñas, reached by a long staircase down from the park. Less crowded than the Sardinero and surrounded by cliffs and the green of Mataleñas, with surfers in winter. The same seasonal ordinance applies: dogs on lead outside the bathing season (typically Oct–Apr), banned during summer bathing hours.

A wide Atlantic sand beach across the bay of Santander on the Ribamontán al Mar coast, well known for surfing. The far eastern end (towards Galizano) has a dog-friendly section signposted under the municipal ordinance of Ribamontán al Mar, providing a practical year-round dog beach option for Santander visitors when the city beaches are closed.
