Saint-Jean-de-Luz is an easy, walkable Basque resort for a long summer stay with a dog, as long as you plan around one big rule: no dogs on any beach, ever. Get that into your routine and the old town, the bay-side promenade and the coastal path do the rest.
Dogs are banned from every Saint-Jean-de-Luz beach all year, even on a lead, with a 38 EUR fine. Plan beach days for your dog up the coast at Bidart, and keep to the promenade, digues and coastal path in town.
Summer afternoons get hot and the coastal path has little shade. Walk dogs early morning and after about 7pm, test pavement and rock with your hand, and carry water on every outing as there are no fountains on the cliffs.
June and September are the sweet spot: warm sea, long days and far fewer crowds than the packed July-August peak. Off-season also makes neighbouring dog-tolerant beaches at Bidart easier, as summer signage is at its strictest.
The old fishing harbour, Place Louis XIV with the Maison Louis XIV, and the outside of the Eglise Saint-Jean-Baptiste, where Louis XIV married Maria Theresa in 1660, are all walkable on a lead. Combine them with the bay promenade and the Sainte-Barbe headland for a full day on foot.
