The famous main beach of the bay, protected by three sea walls so the water is calm and family-friendly. It is exactly the kind of swimming beach long-stay visitors picture, but dogs are banned from the sand here all year.
Rules: Dogs, even leashed, are prohibited on the beach all year. A 38 EUR fine applies. Walk the promenade and digues above the sand instead.
Erromardie is a longer, more relaxed sand beach with campsites behind it, while Lafitenia is the area's prized surf bay with a long right-hand wave. Both are scenic, but the same year-round dog ban applies to them as to the Grande Plage.

The nearest realistic beach day with a dog is up the coast at Bidart, where the long Pavillon Royal sand is known for being more pet-tolerant than the Saint-Jean-de-Luz beaches. Rules still vary by season and by sign, so it is safest outside the high-summer bathing season.
Rules: Dog access is tolerated on parts of the Bidart coast, easiest outside July-August. Always read the on-site signage, as each commune sets its own seasonal rule. Note that Hendaye, the other side of town, allows only assistance dogs on its beaches.
