Opatija is compact and walkable, and the flat 12 km Lungomare seafront promenade is the natural way to get between Volosko, the town centre and Lovran on foot with a dog. There is no train and no local ferry, so beyond walking you will use the Autotrolej city buses or a taxi. Rijeka Airport is on the island of Krk, about an hour away, and the main coach and ferry links run through Rijeka, 15 km up the coast.
| Mode | Policy | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Lungomare promenade (on foot) | Dogs on a leash are welcome the full 12 km from Volosko through Opatija centre to Lovran. This flat, mostly shaded seaside path is the best and most pet-friendly way to move around town. | ๐ก Walk it early morning or evening in summer; the stone paving and open sections get hot at midday. |
| Autotrolej city bus (line 32 RijekaโOpatijaโLovran) | Small dogs travel in a carrier on your lap. Larger dogs are carried at the driver's discretion on a short leash and muzzle; travel outside peak times and keep your dog by the doors. | ๐ก Carry a soft muzzle for a larger dog; it is expected on Croatian public transport and avoids being refused boarding. |
| Taxi & car | Most local taxis accept a leashed, clean dog if you ask when booking; a travel blanket helps. Parking in central Opatija is limited in summer, so many owners base themselves along the Lungomare and walk. | ๐ก The Kvarner catamaran links from Rijeka allow leashed, muzzled dogs on the open deck if you plan an island day trip. |
