Opatija is one of the easiest Croatian resorts to enjoy with a dog thanks to the 12 km Lungomare and two designated dog beaches, but the summer heat and Croatian beach rules need planning. Keep these points in mind for a smooth trip.

- 1.Dogs are only allowed on the two designated dog beaches (Opatija/Punta Kolova and Gornja Ika near Lovran); managed public swimming beaches ban dogs, so do not let your dog onto the concrete bathing platforms in peak season.
- 2.Walk the Lungomare early morning or evening in summer. The stone paving and open sections get very hot at midday, and Kvarner summers regularly hit the low 30s Celsius; carry water and check paw temperature on the stone.
- 3.Carry a soft muzzle and a short leash for your dog. On Croatian public transport (the Autotrolej buses) a muzzle is expected for larger dogs, and it saves you being refused boarding.
