Pet-Friendly Restaurants in Munich

The Augustiner-Keller is one of Munich's oldest and most beloved beer gardens, with space for 5,000 people under ancient chestnut trees. Unlike many Munich beer gardens, it allows you to bring your own picnic food, which makes it particularly popular with locals. Dogs are entirely welcome in the self-service section of the beer garden — a Munich tradition. The Maß of Augustiner beer is considered by many to be the finest in the city.

The Hirschgarten is the largest beer garden in the world, with seating for 8,000 people in a deer park (Hirschgarten literally means deer garden — there are actual deer in enclosures nearby). The atmosphere is extraordinary: a sea of communal tables under chestnut trees, with Bavarian families, office workers, and tourists all mixed together. Dogs are welcome in the self-service area, though you should keep them leashed and away from the deer enclosures.

On Munich's most famous café square in Schwabing, the Café Münchner Freiheit has a large terrace that is one of the best places in the city to sit with a coffee and a dog on a warm afternoon. The café serves breakfast all day, excellent Bavarian cakes, and a solid lunch menu. Dogs are welcome on the terrace and often get a treat from the staff.

A classic Munich Wirtshaus (traditional inn) just steps from the Marienplatz, Zum Franziskaner has been serving Bavarian food and Spaten beer since 1363. The restaurant has a beautiful courtyard garden that becomes a beer garden in summer, where dogs are very welcome. The Weißwurst (white sausage) breakfast here is a Munich institution — the correct way to eat it involves peeling the skin and dipping in sweet mustard.

The Gärtnerplatz is Munich's most relaxed and cosmopolitan square, surrounded by independent restaurants and cafés that spill out onto the hexagonal plaza in warm weather. It is the social heart of Munich's Glockenbachviertel neighbourhood and one of the most dog-friendly outdoor spaces in the city. Multiple cafés around the square (including Café Ignaz and Gärtnerplatz 7) welcome dogs on their outdoor seating.
