Dog Parks & Walks in Munich

At 373 hectares, the Englischer Garten is larger than Central Park and one of the world's great urban parks. For dogs, it is the ultimate Munich destination: multiple designated off-leash areas, the Isar river and Eisbach stream for swimming, the famous artificial surf wave, and kilometre after kilometre of woodland and meadow paths. Dogs are permitted off-leash in the designated Hundezone areas, and there is excellent variety from dense woodland in the north to open meadows in the south.

The Isar river, running through the heart of Munich, is one of the city's greatest amenities. The river banks — particularly the renaturalised southern sections between Wittelsbacherbrücke and the Flaucher — are a major dog destination. The banks are pebbly and the river fast-moving but manageable for strong swimmers. Flaucher (the river bend in Sendling) is the most popular spot and has a beloved beer garden directly on the bank.

Built for the 1972 Olympics, the Olympiapark has grown into one of Munich's great public spaces: a rolling landscape of artificial hills, an Olympic lake, and the tent-roof stadium complex that remains architecturally extraordinary. Dogs are welcome on leash throughout the park grounds, and the lake has dog-accessible banks. The elevated hill (Olympiaberg) gives the best panoramic view of Munich and the Alps beyond.
