Transport for London (TfL) operates one of Europe's most dog-friendly urban transport networks. Dogs travel free on all TfL services, Tube, bus, DLR, London Overground, and Tram, with no size limit on the dog, only behavioural requirements. The single biggest practical challenge is the deep-line Tube escalators: you must carry your dog (unless it is trained to walk escalators or there is a lift available). Stations with lifts are step-free and make dog travel much more practical.
| Mode | Policy | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Underground (Tube) | Dogs travel free. Must be kept on a short lead or in a suitable carrier at all times. Not permitted on seats. Staff cannot take charge of animals. Dogs must be carried on moving escalators unless trained to walk them or a lift is available. Check TfL's step-free access map before travelling to avoid deep-line stations. | ๐ก |
| Bus & Tram | Dogs travel free. Permitted at driver's discretion, a driver may refuse if the dog seems dangerous or uncontrolled. Dogs must be on a lead and not on seats. In practice, well-behaved dogs on leads are accepted without issue on the vast majority of London buses. | ๐ก |
| National Rail & Elizabeth Line | Dogs travel free on most National Rail services within London and the Southeast. Well-behaved dogs are allowed on all Elizabeth Line (Crossrail) services. On longer National Rail journeys outside London, a maximum of two dogs per passenger applies. Dogs must be on leads. | ๐ก |
