London is unusually well-suited for dog travel โ the city's pub culture, green space per capita, and liberal transport rules make it easier than many European capitals. The main friction points are the post-Brexit entry requirements (no EU pet passport accepted), escalators on deep-line Tube stations, and the summer heat in enclosed Tube carriages. Plan your travel around step-free stations and you'll have very few issues.
EU pet passports are no longer valid for entry to the UK. You must obtain a UK Animal Health Certificate (AHC) from an accredited vet in your home country, issued within 10 days of travel. Dogs also require a tapeworm treatment (Praziquantel) administered by a vet 1โ5 days before arrival in the UK. Your vet must enter the treatment date and product name in the AHC. Check the current requirements at gov.uk/bring-pet-to-great-britain โ rules changed in 2024 and can update.
Dogs must be on a lead on all public streets and pavements. Off-lead is permitted in most Royal Parks and green spaces outside designated protected areas. Fouling fines are enforced (typically ยฃ100). Banned breeds under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991: Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro. These breeds are prohibited in the UK even if microchipped and vaccinated โ check breed rules before planning travel.
