Jurmala's 33 km of white-sand Baltic coast is famously the summer playground of Riga's elite, and equally famously closed to dogs in summer. By municipal rule dogs are prohibited from the beach from April 1 to October 31 in all sections, including Majori, Dzintari, Bulduri, Pumpuri, Jaundubulti and Lielupe. From November 1 to March 31 the entire 33 km coast opens to leashed dogs and becomes one of the longest dog beaches in northern Europe. The rule was updated in late 2024 after a residents' petition. Outside the summer ban, the wide hard sand at low tide is ideal for long off-season walks.
