Best Parks for Dogs in Haarlem, Haarlemmerhout & Schoterbos Off-Leash

The oldest public park in the Netherlands, planted in 1583 just south of the historic core, with mature beech and oak avenues, the Heerenduinweg pond, and broad lawns popular with morning dog walkers from the Welgelegen and Bos en Vaart neighbourhoods. Dogs must be leashed throughout most of the park, but a clearly marked off-leash meadow sits on the eastern Mauritslaan side and runs for roughly 5 hectares.

A 40-hectare wooded municipal park north of the Spaarne with two well-signed off-leash meadows ('hondenweides'), a small pond loop, and a flat 3 km perimeter path popular with cyclists and runners. The northern off-leash meadow is the favourite for big-breed groups; the southern one (near the Vondelweg entrance) is smaller and quieter. Drinking taps in summer and a kiosk café by the playground.

A 38 km² dune and pine-forest national park between Haarlem and the North Sea, with miles of marked walking routes through wild coastal heath, freshwater ponds and Hoogheid dune ridges. Dogs are leashed on most routes but a dedicated off-leash zone exists in the Koevlak section near the Overveen entrance. European bison and Highland cattle graze in fenced sections; check the route map at the entrance before you set off.
