Dog-Friendly Things to Do in Haarlem, Grote Markt & Sixteen Hofjes

The cobbled Grote Markt is the historic heart of Haarlem, dominated by the Late-Gothic Grote Sint-Bavokerk (the cathedral where Frans Hals is buried and where Mozart played the Müller organ as a 10-year-old in 1766). The cathedral interior admits only assistance dogs, but leashed dogs can roam the entire market square, sit at any of the eight terrace cafés, and circle the cathedral's exterior buttresses at the Klokhuisplein.

The 50-minute classic canal cruise along the Spaarne and the inner city singels is the easiest way to see Haarlem at water level, with views of De Adriaan windmill, the Gravestenenbrug drawbridge, and the cathedral towers from below. Dogs ride free at the operator's discretion, the open back deck is the natural spot, and the route is gentle enough for elderly or anxious dogs.

Haarlem has sixteen historic almshouse courtyards (hofjes) tucked inside the centre, the oldest being the 1395 Hofje van Bakenes, and most are open to visitors on a self-guided walking route. Leashed dogs are welcome in every hofje listed on the official city route (about half of the sixteen open daily, the others on weekdays only). The hofjes are small, calm, and silent: perfect mid-walk stops away from the cathedral crowds.
