Best Parks for Dogs in Groningen, Noorderplantsoen & Stadspark Off-Leash

Groningen's most loved central park, 12 hectares laid out in 1830 on the old northern ramparts in English-style landscape form with winding ponds, mature beech and chestnut avenues, a bandstand and several open-air cafés. Hosts the Noorderzon performing-arts festival every August. The fenced off-leash dog meadow ('hondenlosloopgebied') sits on the western edge, and the long perimeter trails work as a calm 2.5 km loop on leash. Used by city dog owners morning and evening year-round.

Groningen's largest park, 140 hectares south of the centre, laid out in the 1920s with wide lawns, a lake (the Stadsparkvijver), shaded woodland trails, a horse-racing track and a year-round event field. Multiple fenced off-leash dog meadows ('losloopgebieden') signposted along the central avenues, and a 5 km perimeter cycle/walk loop. Quiet on weekday mornings, busy on Sundays with cyclists, joggers and city dog walkers.

A long canal-side towpath running north out of Groningen along the historic Reitdiep waterway toward the Wadden Sea polders, lined with old shipping warehouses, drawbridges and wide reed-fringed views. Dogs welcome on leash for the first 3 km on the city quay, then off-leash on the rural towpath beyond the Reitdiephaven marina (signposted losloopgebied). Flat, shaded by alders, and one of the most photogenic dog walks in the Dutch north.
