Dog Beaches near Groningen, Schiermonnikoog & Lauwersmeer Wadden Coast

The smallest inhabited Frisian Wadden island and the most rewarding dog-beach destination from Groningen, 50 km NE via Qbuzz bus 163 to Lauwersoog plus the 45-min Wagenborg ferry. Dogs are allowed leashed on the dunes year-round, off-leash on the full East End beach from October 1 to March 31, and in a fenced dog zone on the central beach from April to September. The whole island is a Nationaal Park and UNESCO Wadden Sea natural site; cars are not allowed for visitors, perfect for a leashed walk on empty sand.

A 6,000-hectare reclaimed-lake national park 30 km NE of Groningen, on the Wadden Sea coast, a key autumn stopover on the migratory bird highway and one of the darkest skies in the Netherlands. Dogs are allowed leashed on most marked trails, and the Marnewaard beach on the southern shore offers a wide sandy stretch with dog-friendly access (leashed) for swimming and stick-throwing. The visitor centre at Lauwersoog has dog-friendly outdoor café terraces.

A wilder, quieter stretch of Wadden coast 40 km north of Groningen, anchored by the village of Pieterburen, home to the famous Zeehondencentrum seal-rescue centre. The 4 km dyke walk east of the village offers wide views over the tidal flats where seals haul out and migratory waders gather. Dogs are leashed on the dyke (sheep grazing) and on the seaward saltmarsh path; the Zeehondencentrum itself admits only assistance dogs but its outdoor café terrace is dog-friendly. One of the most underrated walks in the Dutch north.
