Girona's city council runs one of Catalonia's most dog-forward green policies: five official canine itineraries totalling 7 km where dogs may walk off-leash under their owner's control, along the Ter and Onyar rivers, the Santa Eugenia market gardens and the Sant Daniel valley, plus five fenced dog runs (two of them in the great Devesa park) and summer shared-use woods. Add the Gavarres massif trailheads on the city's doorstep and you get a rare thing: a historic city where the dog can legally stretch out.
Girona's monumental 40-hectare park of towering plane trees, laid out in shaded avenues between the old town and the Ter river, holds two of the city's five fenced dog runs. The gravel alleys stay cool even in high summer, the best midday refuge in town for a dog.

Directly behind the cathedral, the green Sant Daniel valley slips out of the city walls into the wooded Gavarres massif, with one of the official canine itineraries at its mouth and marked hiking trails beyond. Springs, a Romanesque monastery and holm-oak forest within 20 minutes' walk of the Barri Vell.
