Dog-Friendly Beaches near Girona

Spain's first official dog beach, a wide wild strand between Empuriabrava and Roses inside the Aiguamolls de l'Emporda natural park, where dogs run, swim and socialise freely on a generous designated stretch. Fine sand, dunes and marshland birdlife behind, about 50 minutes' drive from Girona.

L'Escala's clearly signposted dog beach, a long stretch of fine golden sand with a large car park right behind, where dogs run free and swim whenever they like. The closest official dog beach to Girona city, about 40 minutes by car, next to the Greek and Roman ruins of Empuries.

No sea in town, but the Ter's shallow gravel banks along the official canine itinerary give Girona dogs their daily swim, ten minutes' walk from the Devesa. Calm pools in summer, grassy banks for drying off, and off-leash legality on the marked route.
