April-June and September-October are ideal, average highs 14-22 °C, the Citadelpark and Coupure canal in full leafy bloom. Avoid the Gentse Feesten festival (10 days late July, 1M+ visitors) when the historic centre is packed and dogs are easily overwhelmed; winter is quiet, wet but magical with Christmas markets that admit leashed dogs.
Ghent is a perfect home base for free-dog NMBS day trips: Bruges in 25 min, Brussels in 30 min, Antwerp in 50 min, the Brussels Airport branch (BRU) in 50 min, and the Ostend dog beach in 1h. The Gentse Feesten 10-day festival in late July is spectacular but crowds reach 1M+ visitors and the entire car-free centre becomes a packed festival ground; plan dog stays elsewhere those dates.
