Ghent gives dogs plenty of room: the 13-hectare Citadelpark anchors the south with a fenced off-leash zone, the 300-hectare Bourgoyen-Ossemeersen NATURA 2000 reserve borders the west, and the Blaarmeersen recreational lake adds a dedicated dog beach and an off-leash run only 4 km from the centre.
Ghent's largest central park, built on the 19th-century citadel grounds south of the historic centre, around the SMAK contemporary-art museum and the MSK fine-arts museum. Wooded paths, lawns, a bandstand and a dedicated fenced off-leash dog area. Leashed dogs welcome throughout; the hondenweide is in the south-east corner.
💡 Weekday mornings before 10:00 are the calmest social time in the fenced zone; weekends bring a crowd of student owners with young dogs.
The municipal recreational park around the Blaarmeersen lake, 4 km west of the centre. Designated dog-swim beach on the north-west shore, an unfenced off-leash dog meadow, plus walking loops, cafés and a campsite. The only city-managed dog beach inside Ghent proper.
💡 The human-swim beach forbids dogs from May to September; head straight to the north-west dog-beach sign, the two zones are well separated.
A 300-hectare NATURA 2000 wet-meadow nature reserve on the western edge of Ghent, prime overwintering ground for waterbirds. Dogs are admitted strictly on lead on the marked routes; the visitor centre at the Driepikkelstraat entrance is the easiest start point.
💡 Stick strictly to the marked path with the dog, the rangers enforce NATURA 2000 rules and a single off-path incident can draw a 100 EUR fine for disturbance.
The straight tree-lined Coupure canal runs west from the centre to the Watersportbaan rowing lake, flat, car-restricted, double rows of plane trees and student houseboats. The classic Ghent dog walk for owners on foot or bike, with cafés along the route.
