Most visitors fly into Fuerteventura Airport (FUE) at El Matorral, just south of the capital, with direct flights from across Europe. Once on the island a hire car is essential: Fuerteventura is large, distances are long and the dog beaches, dunes and villages are far apart, with only limited public transport. Ferries link the island to Lanzarote and Gran Canaria and carry dogs, and local buses take small dogs in a carrier, but for real freedom you will want your own wheels.
