Dubai with a dog rewards realistic planning. It is a hot desert city where dogs are far less present in public than in Europe, where most malls, public parks, beaches and transport ban pets, and where summer heat is genuinely dangerous. But it is also extremely well served by 24-hour vets, has a small set of dog parks and dog-friendly terraces, and is comfortable for outdoor life from November to March. Plan around the heat, the rules and the seasons, and it works.
From June to September, daytime temperatures regularly exceed 40 C and often hit 45 C, and asphalt can run far hotter than the air, sometimes above 50 C, hot enough to burn paw pads in seconds. Use the seven-second pavement rule: if you cannot hold the back of your hand on the ground for seven seconds, it is too hot for paws. Walk only at dawn or after dark in summer, consider booties and paw balm, carry water everywhere, and never leave a pet in a parked car. Heatstroke risk is high, so know the nearest 24-hour vet before you need it.
Dogs must be leashed in all public spaces; off-leash is illegal outside fenced dog parks and can draw fines from a few hundred to several thousand dirhams. Dogs must be microchipped, vaccinated and registered with the municipality. Culturally, dogs are far less present in public than in Europe, and many people are not used to them, so keep your dog close, avoid mosques and busy family areas, and read the room. Certain breeds (Pit Bull types, Rottweilers, Dobermans, wolf hybrids and more) are banned from ownership and import.
Peak pet-travel season is the winter-sun window from November to March, when outdoor life is pleasant and pet resorts charge their high-season rates. Set expectations clearly: malls, indoor attractions, public parks and public beaches ban dogs, and the Metro is off-limits. The realistic dog outings are the fenced dog parks, the dog-friendly cafe terraces, the waterfront promenades along the Dubai Water Canal and Creek Harbour, the Al Qudra desert lakes (but not Love Lake, which bans dogs), Last Exit food-truck parks, and a Hatta mountain day trip.
