Capri, a 10.4 kmยฒ limestone island in the Bay of Naples, has lived two histories: a Roman imperial retreat under Augustus and then Tiberius, who spent the last eleven years of his life here at the Villa Jovis, and a reinvented European resort from the late 19th century onward, when the Swedish doctor Axel Munthe built the Villa San Michele in Anacapri and the writers and artists of the North turned the island into a Mediterranean myth. The island is divided into two municipalities โ Capri (south-east, with the Piazzetta and Marina Grande harbour) and Anacapri (north-west, calmer, higher, around Piazza Caprile) โ and counts roughly 13,000 permanent residents, multiplied tenfold in peak season. For pet travellers, Capri is workable but demands precise logistics: no airport on the island, access only by ferry from Naples (Molo Beverello, 40-80 minutes depending on the boat type) or Sorrento (30 minutes), and the four operators โ Caremar, NLG, SNAV, Alilauro โ all accept leashed and muzzled dogs on outdoor decks year-round, with small dogs in carriers indoors. The Italian national rule bans dogs from paid lido beach concessions 15 May to 30 September, which covers most of Capri's accessible shoreline; the public rock platforms at Punta Carena lighthouse in Anacapri and the free fringe of Marina Piccola stay open on leash year-round. Critical point: Capri has no 24/7 veterinary hospital on the island, the reference hospital is the Clinica San Francesco in Naples, reached by the last evening ferry (around 22:00 in summer) or a private speedboat transfer. Anacapri is the calmer base with a dog, away from the summer crush of Capri Town's Piazzetta.
The three iconic limestone stacks of Capri, rising from the sea off the south-east coast. The public Punta Tragara belvedere at the end of Via Tragara from the Quisisana hotel offers the signature panorama, freely accessible 24h. Dogs on leash welcome along the whole path year-round.
A 1902 switchback pedestrian path commissioned by the industrialist Friedrich Krupp, carved into the cliff from the Giardini di Augusto down to Marina Piccola. One of the most photographed walks in Italy, fully dog-friendly on leash, free access. Occasional closures after rockfalls, check with the tourist office.
A terraced clifftop botanical garden above Capri Town, donated by Friedrich Krupp in the early 20th century. Bougainvillea-lined paths and the iconic direct panorama of the Faraglioni and Marina Piccola. Small ticket fee (around EUR 1.50), 5 minutes from the Piazzetta, dogs on leash welcome.
The former home and garden of Swedish doctor Axel Munthe, perched 305 m above Marina Grande in Anacapri, with pergolas, antique fragments and a belvedere over the Bay of Naples. Dogs on leash welcome in the gardens (not in the indoor museum rooms). Ticket EUR 11.
The 589 m highest point of Capri with a 360-degree panorama from the Gulf of Salerno to the Bay of Naples. Reached by chairlift from Anacapri (small dogs only in soft carrier on lap) or on foot via the Passetiello path (90 min, dog-friendly on leash). The summit Bar Solaro has shaded terraces and water bowls.
The lighthouse promontory at Anacapri's south-west tip, with public rock platforms and unobstructed sunset views. No bathing concession, so accessible to leashed dogs year-round โ the calmest and most dog-friendly stretch of shoreline on Capri.
