Getting Around Budapest with Your Pet

Budapest's public transport network (operated by BKK) is comprehensive and covers the city well. The good news for pet owners is that dogs are allowed on all forms of BKK transport — metro, trams, buses, and the HÉV suburban railway — under specific conditions. The rules are consistent and not difficult to follow. Small dogs in carriers travel free. Larger dogs on a leash (with muzzle) require a half-price child ticket. The system runs frequently and Budapest is compact enough that most tourist areas are within reach of a short transit ride.
