Dog-Friendly Attractions in Budapest

The Castle Hill district is one of Central Europe's great urban heritage sites: a UNESCO-listed hilltop citadel with the Royal Palace, Matthias Church, and the neo-Romanesque Fishermen's Bastion. Dogs on leash are welcome throughout the open outdoor areas. The Fishermen's Bastion terraces offer some of the best views of the Pest side across the Danube. The hill is reachable by funicular (dogs not allowed on the funicular — use the walking path from Adam Clark tér instead).

Heroes' Square (Hősök tere) at the end of Andrássy Avenue is one of Budapest's defining spaces — the monumental Millennium Monument, the twin museum buildings, and the gateway to Városliget. Dogs on leash are welcome throughout the square and in the adjacent City Park. Vajdahunyad Castle at the edge of the park lake is a stunning neo-Gothic, Romanesque, and Baroque composite building. Worth combining with a park walk to make a half-day excursion.

UNESCO-listed Andrássy Avenue is Budapest's grandest boulevard: 2.5km of fin-de-siècle apartment palaces, the State Opera House, embassies, and the underground M1 metro running beneath. Walking the full length from Deák tér to Heroes' Square with a dog is one of Budapest's great urban walks. The tree-lined central promenade provides shade on hot days. Dog-friendly café terraces line sections of the boulevard.
