Dog-Friendly Attractions in Bergamo

The monumental medieval square at the heart of Città Alta, framed by the Palazzo della Ragione, the Biblioteca Mai, the Contarini fountain, and the Campanone bell tower. Le Corbusier reportedly called it 'the most beautiful square in Europe.' Leashed dogs are welcome throughout the piazza and the connecting Piazza del Duomo, where the Cappella Colleoni exterior and the cathedral facade can be admired without entering. Café terraces around the square almost all accept dogs.

The 14th-century Rocca fortress crowns the highest point of Città Alta, with a grassy park around its walls that is one of the best dog-friendly viewpoints in the city. The fortress interior houses the Risorgimento museum (no dogs inside), but the surrounding park, the panoramic terrace, and the connecting Cittadella square are all freely accessible with a leashed dog. Picnic benches under mature trees make this a top spot for a hot afternoon.

The ruined castle at the top of the San Vigilio funicular crowns the hill at 496 m and offers a 360° panorama from the Bergamo Alps to the Po Valley. The ruins, the surrounding wooded park, and the panoramic terrace are entirely free to access and fully dog-friendly, leashed dogs are welcome everywhere. From the castle, marked trails descend into the Parco dei Colli for a longer dog walk back to the city.
