Barcelona's public transport system (TMB) has clear and somewhat restrictive rules for pets. Small dogs and cats in a closed carrier are permitted free of charge on the metro and buses at all times. Larger dogs — anything that cannot fit comfortably in a regulation carrier — are not permitted on the metro or urban buses. This is a genuine constraint that affects day planning. The practical workarounds are taxis (most accept dogs, though always confirm before getting in), ride-hailing apps like Cabify (which has a pet option), and simply walking, which in Barcelona's compact, walkable neighbourhoods is often the best option anyway.
