The most reliable freshwater dog swim in the city: a 13-acre off-leash island right below the Tom Miller Dam, with several gentle gravel and grass entry points into the calm water. Not a sandy beach, more a mix of gravel bank and grass, but dogs treat it exactly like one.
Rules: Off-leash and unfenced, 5am–10pm. Owners must clean up after dogs. Watch for boat traffic near the dam.
A gravel launch point inside the designated off-leash zone at Auditorium Shores where dogs jump straight into Lady Bird Lake with the downtown skyline as a backdrop. Popular and can get crowded on warm weekends. Stay inside the marked off-leash area, the rest of the shoreline is on-leash only.
Rules: Off-leash only inside the marked zone between Riverside Drive and the lake. Leash required everywhere else in the park, with fines up to USD 500 for violations.
A shaded limestone swimming hole on Barton Creek with sandbars and rock ledges, reached by a short walk down the Greenbelt trail. Dogs swim in the creek at most access points along the trail. Water level depends heavily on recent rainfall and the hole can run shallow or dry after a dry spell, check conditions before the drive.
Rules: Austin Parks requires dogs on-leash on all Greenbelt trails, actively enforced. In practice many owners let dogs swim under close voice control at the water's edge; leashing up on the trail itself is the safest approach to avoid a citation.
