Dog-Friendly Attractions in Austin

From roughly March through October, up to 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats stream out from under the Congress Avenue Bridge at dusk, one of the largest urban bat colonies in North America. Watch from the hike-and-bike trail below the bridge, the bridge sidewalk itself, or the free viewing area near the Austin American-Statesman building at 305 South Congress Avenue, all outdoor, leashed-dog-friendly vantage points.

Austin's highest public overlook, reached by a short but steep 102-step limestone staircase, with sweeping views over Lake Austin and the Texas Hill Country. Dogs are welcome on leash. The limestone can get hot underfoot in summer and the steps have no shade, an early morning or evening visit is far more comfortable for a dog than midday.

A 28-acre botanical garden with themed sections including a Japanese garden, a rose garden, and a cactus and succulent collection. According to the garden's own FAQ, leashed dogs are welcome on the grounds year-round except during a handful of special ticketed evening events, such as the Woodland Faerie Trail. Shaded paths make it a genuinely pleasant midday option even in warmer months.
